In January 2002, while confined in Ramallah, Mahmoud Darwish wrote this poem—composed of about a hundred fragments—in response to the Israeli army’s offensive in the Palestinian Autonomous Territory. An impromptu poem, in which each fragment captures a moment, a scene, or a fleeting thought, it marks the beginning of a new phase in the poet’s career.
