The political writings of Frantz Fanon collected in this volume span the most productive period of his life, from the publication of "Black Skin, White Masks" in 1952—when he was twenty-eight years old—to that of "The Wretched of the Earth" in 1961, which was to coincide, give or take a few days, with the date of his death. Tracing the evolution of his constantly developing reflections on the colonial phenomenon, as experienced from within, these texts denounce both colonialism and the pitfalls of decolonization—the “great white error” and the “great black mirage.” Exploring in turn the situation of the colonized—which he could describe scientifically through his daily medical experience—the attitude of leftist intellectuals toward the Algerian War, the prospects for uniting the struggles of all the colonized peoples, and the conditions for an alliance across the entire African continent, Frantz Fanon remained certain of Africa’s imminent and complete liberation. His analysis and the clarity of his vision provide us today with the keys necessary to understand the current reality in Africa.
